This morning Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced Mitsui E&P Australia (MEPAU) will receive $20 million to kick-start the establishment of a Mid West Modern Energy Hub, providing an industry leading Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) solution for emissions intensive activities.

MEPAU’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Ken Yamamura welcomed the announcement, saying the Hub will be a key component in MEPAU’s efforts to support its customers transition to a low-carbon economy.

“Mitsui E&P Australia is committed to a collaborative and flexible pathway to rapid decarbonisation which promotes innovation and emerging best practice technologies,” Mr Yamamura said.

“We are incredibly grateful for the Australian Government’s support for the Mid West Modern Energy Hub and look forward to continuing our collaboration with the Australian and Western Australian Governments and our industry partners and customers.”

The development of the Hub will see a collaboration between MEPAU and a range of industry partners and potential customers including the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC).

The Australian Government’s support aligns with the Western Australian Government’s commitment to provide regulatory certainty through dedicated Greenhouse Gas Storage and Transport legislation.

MEPAU’s close collaboration with the Australian Government reflects the alignment of the company’s transition to a low-carbon economy with the Commonwealth Government’s Long-Term Emissions Reduction Plan.
