MEPAU has committed to enabling the mitigation of industrial process emissions and accelerate the decarbonisation of Australian industry.

MEPAU is evaluating carbon capture, transport and storage in the Mid West of Western Australia with aspirations to deliver carbon storage as a service for carbon emitters in the Mid West, Kwinana and other locations in Australia, and in the future internationally.

Our aim is to assist industry to reduce emissions and avoid carbon from reaching the atmosphere by providing a robust long-term storage solution. MEPAU’s strategy supports industry to implement net-zero strategies.

Rapid Decarbonisation with CCS

Accelerating the decarbonisation of Australian industry

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is an important part of the pathway to a low-carbon energy future. It enables rapid decarbonisation and emissions reduction by utilising a combination of technologies to capture and store large volumes of carbon dioxide in order to prevent its release into the atmosphere.

CCS involves three steps: capture at source, transport of the carbon dioxide, and injection of the carbon dioxide into rock formations deep underground for safe storage.

We are committed to a collaborative and flexible pathway to rapid decarbonisation which promotes innovation and emerging best practice technologies, such as CCS and ammonia as a fuel source replacing thermal coal.

MEPAU is evaluating carbon capture, transport and storage in the Mid West of Western Australia with aspirations to deliver carbon storage as a service for carbon emitters in the Mid West, Kwinana (Perth) and other locations in Australia and, in the future, internationally.

Our aim is to assist industry to reduce emissions and avoid carbon from reaching the atmosphere by providing a robust long-term storage solution.

Carbon Farming

A leading nature‑based carbon offset business

With abundant land availability for carbon farming coupled with well-established Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) framework and regulations, Australia offers good opportunities for developing nature‑based carbon offset projects.

MEPAU established a Carbon Solutions Business team and acquired Outback Carbon, a carbon project developer business, in May 2021.

Outback Carbon’s solutions are provided via Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF), a Federal Government initiative, with the methods of:

  • Reforestation by environmental or mallee plantings (FullCAM)
  • Plantation Forestry
  • Soil Carbon
  • Human Induced Revegetation (HIR).

Outback Carbon’s focus is to work with landholders, local businesses, local communities and other stakeholders to develop carbon farming (ACCU) projects.

Low Carbon Ammonia Plant

Creating a supply chain of low carbon ammonia for significant growth

Through a joint feasibility study on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in Western Australia associated with its Perth Basin investments, MEPAU is investigating the commercial and technical viability of building a low carbon ammonia production plant, which will include CCS solutions.

MEPAU is conducting a joint feasibility study with Wesfarmers Chemicals, Energy & Fertilisers Limited (WesCEF) and Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) to collaboratively investigate CCS and low carbon ammonia opportunities in Western Australia associated with MEPAU’s Perth Basin investments.

The joint study with JOGMEC and WesCEF will research the potential for CCS in depleted gas fields, and also consider alternate sites in Western Australia. MEPAU will investigate the production and export of low carbon ammonia made from hydrogen generated from Mid West natural gas, with potential for the associated CO2 to be stored in depleted gas fields in Perth Basin.
