Mitsui E&P Australia (MEPAU) invites local residents to an information exchange session covering the full range of our onshore gas exploration, production and development activities in the Shire of Irwin including:
- Waitsia Gas Development project plans
- Decommissioning and Rehabilitation activities, and
- Production operations
Since MEPAU took over AWE Limited in May 2018, we have continued the program of assessing and developing gas resources in the onshore northern Perth Basin, which is based on the work undertaken since the 1960s by predecessor companies. Local stakeholder engagement continues to be an important part of this program.
The session is a chance for MEPAU to outline our plans, answer any questions you may have about our projects, identify opportunities and further understand each other’s views.
Activities overview:
The Waitsia gas field, discovered in August 2014, is located 14.5 km east of Dongara on private agricultural land. It is a free-flowing reservoir discovered using conventional drilling methods.
In 2016, Waitsia Stage 1 began producing gas, as an Extended Production Test, at the refurbished Xyris Production Facility. This test has helped provide valuable information about the Waitsia gas field. Latest plans include expanding Stage 1 by producing from another nearby well and installing a connecting pipeline to the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline.
We are also in the design phase of Waitsia Stage 2. This proposal involves constructing a new gas plant adjacent to the existing Xyris Production Facility, connecting two existing wells and drilling up to six additional wells over the next 24 months. The proposed new gas plant will be able to produce up to 250 TJ/day from the conventional, free-flowing reservoir. The project does not require Hydraulic Fracture Stimulation (fracking).
MEPAU recently referred the Waitsia Stage 2 project to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) to help determine approval requirements. The EPA is now determining the Level of Assessment.
Feedback from stakeholders is being sought throughout the design phase and we would like to hear from a wider range of local stakeholders about what aspects are of most interest to you.
At the same time we are producing gas and considering Waitsia gas development options, we are continuing decommissioning and rehabilitation activities. This means that our overall footprint is gradually reducing and that land is progressively being returned to its previous use.
