The Mid West Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s 2026 Mid West Economic Forum, held on 2–3 June, brought together government, industry, and community leaders to explore the region’s economic outlook and growth opportunities. The forum reinforced the Mid West’s position as a key driver of Western Australia’s economy, underpinned by strong resources, energy, and export sectors.
Mitsui E&P Australia (MEPAU), together with joint venture partner Beach Energy, sponsored the Welcome Dinner, which opened the forum. The sold-out event provided valuable networking opportunities, accompanied by a menu from Hungarian chef Csaba Sellei showcasing the Mid West’s renowned seafood and fresh local produce.
The following day at Geraldton’s Queen’s Park Theatre, delegates attended presentations and panel discussions on regional development, investment, and economic growth, underscoring the importance of collaboration, innovation, and strategic planning in unlocking the region’s potential.
The Hon Stephen Dawson MLC, Minister for Regional Development, gave the keynote address and described the Mid West as an emerging strategic energy hub. He highlighted the role of gas in supporting domestic demand and enabling new industries, alongside growing opportunities in renewables and critical minerals. Invited speakers highlighted that investment confidence remains strong, supported by infrastructure development, port capacity, and proximity to Asian markets.
Economic diversification was a central theme, with discussions focused on attracting new industries, supporting local businesses, and strengthening workforce capability. Strong emphasis was placed on government and industry collaboration to unlock investment, reduce regulatory barriers, and support sustainable growth. MEPAU’s Head of Government, Stakeholder Relations and Approvals, Kris Waddington, participated in the Energy Panel, sharing insights on the Mid West energy transition and key challenges and opportunities.
Overall, the forum delivered a positive outlook for the region, highlighting opportunities for investment, job creation, and long-term growth. MEPAU is pleased to support the Mid West’s development and remain an active contributor to its future success.
